Temecula, Riverside County
Grapes were first planted commercially in the Temecula Valley in the late 1960s, and the area became a federally recognized wine region in 1984. Cool afternoon air from the Pacific slips through a gap in the coastal hills, which keeps the vineyards from overheating. Dozens of wineries now line Rancho California Road east of Temecula.
